Staying Inactive Physically For 20years Doubles The Premature Death Risk
Researchers revealed at the Paris based European Society of Cardiology Congress of 2019, that risk of premature death doubles among people leading sedentary lives for more than 20 years in comparison to their physically active counterparts. In the past too experts have associated inactive lifestyle with poor health issues but this study presents a clearer picture. They studied how physical activity of 22 years was related to death and death from cardiovascular problems. The research team examined how habits and behavior related to physical activity changes over two decades as they wanted to understand how mortality rate is connected with physical activity.
The study was led by Dr. Trine Moholdt from Norwegian Univ. of Science and Technology and they examined data from HUNT study. The study had recruited residents from Norway aged 20 and above and examined their physical activity between time periods of 1984–1986, 1995–1997 and lastly from 2006 to 2008. During each follow-up researcher team requested participants about details of leisure and physical activity. This study used data from first and last survey which also included death statistics till 2013. Researchers then established a reference comprising of people who exercised strongly on regular basis during 1st and 3rd period for comparison.
They then compared data of regular exercisers with those who rarely were physically active during 1st and 3rd study periods and also during 2006-2008. They declared that inactive group was twice more likely to die from various disease and their risk of developing cardiovascular problems was three times more than other groups. According to Dr. Moholdt there are several recommendations about how much exercise is required by adults of varied age groups. People should aim for around 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week like brisk walking, dancing, cycling or swimming. Sitting down for long periods can compound heart issues and negate benefits of physical activity.
